Graff : Baselworld First

As Graff Diamonds brings its luxury watch collections and exquisite jewellery creations to BaselWorld for the very first time, we take an in-depth look at a business famous for rare diamonds and unique jewels, which is now establishing itself as an innovator in the world of haute horology. Founded by Laurence Graff OBE in 1960, Graff Diamonds is synonymous with the most fabulous jewels in the world. Over the years Graff has handled many of the world’s most treasured gemstones – and it has been said that more important gem quality diamonds have passed through Laurence Graff’s hands than any other Diamantaire.  Some of the stones are centuries old and steeped in myth and history while others have just been discovered and brought to life by Graff’s team of Master Craftsmen.

Each Graff jewel is made by hand in Graff’s London workshop; from the creation of the design to the immaculate setting each piece requires many hours of work, some several hundred hours.  At Graff, unique statement pieces showcase artistic skill, meticulous attention to detail and design ingenuity. Intricately articulated with invisible platinum settings and expertly all set by hand, Graff is renowned for its exquisite brooches, necklaces, rings, bracelets and tiaras. Stones are sourced for their colour and quality, with only the very finest being selected to grace the final masterpiece that is a Graff jewel.

Launched in 2009, Graff’s watches are hand crafted in Geneva the capital of luxury timepieces – their distinctive style is inspired by the facets of a brilliant cut diamond, distinctive and elegant, timeless and contemporary. The Graff Luxury Watch collection appeals to horological enthusiasts and diamond connoisseurs alike, with five distinct collections: Technical, Dress, Sport, Jewelled and Bespoke, with Graff’s inspirational craftsmanship in jewellery applied equally to its luxury watch collections. Graff’s in-house team and specialist partners, the elite of Swiss horology, combine their skill and knowledge to develop highly complex models, including minute repeaters, double-axis tourbillons, ultra flat tourbillons, diamond-set automatic skeleton watches and proprietary designed calibres – and are continually pushing the boundaries of horological design and diamond expertise. In 2010, Graff launched its first in-house designed movement and this year, Graff Luxury Watches unveils its fifth calibre at BaselWorld. Graff has developed a patented, innovative gem-setting technique for its watches, adding a further dimension of luxury. Over a year in development, the setting known as ‘mosaic’ is comprised of invisibly set trilliant and triangle cut diamonds, carefully arranged and angled to replicate the facets of Graff’s signature bezel design. The faceted bezel, diamond-tipped crown and gemstone set at 12 o’clock are unique Graff signatures, which can be found, incorporated into many of its timepieces.

A Bespoke Approach
The Graff Bespoke Watch Service is unique: clients are able to harness the craftsmen’s skills in both haute horology and diamond design in order to perfect their chosen timepiece. Each bespoke design begins with the pure Graff watch aesthetic. Graff then works closely with the client to help realise their dreams. A bespoke design often features complications such as a tourbillon, minute repeater or chronograph, combined with a bespoke take on Graff’s renowned unique diamond setting.

An iconic timepiece inspired by the delicate symmetry of the wings of a butterfly
The butterfly motif has been a classic inspiration for the design team at Graff Diamonds, first with the creation of the Classic Butterfly jewellery collection, followed more recently by the Butterfly Motif and Butterfly Silhouette collections. Each jewellery piece features a beautiful butterfly brought to life through a myriad of exquisite gemstones and is a design feature now incorporated into Graff’s iconic butterfly watch.

Inspired by the delicate symmetry of the wings of a butterfly, the Butterfly Watch is a modern reworking of this timeless subject, interpreted through the finest quality gemstones in the world. The wings of the butterfly are comprised of a highly sculptural arrangement of four glittering pear shape diamonds, which appear to hover above a layer of intricately set gemstones, ready to take flight. Each stone has been carefully hand selected and set by Graff’s Master Craftsmen, ensuring only the finest quality stones are used. At the centre of the watch is a delicate pavé diamond timepiece. Graff’s Butterfly Watch makes a striking statement on the wrist – available in a graceful all-diamond design set on an elegant black satin strap, and also in gemstone versions which burst with colour incorporating sapphires, rubies and emeralds each set with complementary alligator straps.

The diamond GyroGraff : the latest addition to the Mastergraff Collection
The horologically advanced Diamond GyroGraff features a moon phase complication in volume, combined with a double axis tourbillon for the first time. Off-set at 8 o’clock, the hand carved moon phase indicator charts the daily progression of the cycle of the moon, completing one lunar rotation every 29.5 days. Providing balance and symmetry the tourbillon movement sits a 5 o’clock, while a 60 hour power reserve indicator is positioned at 11 o’clock. Each element is perfectly complemented by a diamond bezel featuring Graff’s signature invisible mosaic setting. Further iconic features synonymous with Graff Luxury Watches are also incorporated into this luxurious timepiece, including a triangular-cut emerald positioned at 12 o’clock and a diamond tipped crown. The location of the crown creates an eye-catching feature, balancing the design of the dial and presenting a modern and distinctive silhouette.
