Breguet’s bet on thinness

In this age of aiming for thin, thinner or thinnest in watch movements and cases, few have done it as impressively as Breguet with its Classique Tourbillon Extra Plat Squelette 5395. Not because this is the thinnest tourbillon movement on the market today (other brands have managed to snag that record), but because, when it comes to expressing aesthetics through skeletonized movements and traditional craftmanship, this particular piece shows the brand’s centuries-old pedigree in both design and traditional watchmaking. Breguet has managed to fit in a whole lot of craftmanship and detail in a case that’s 41mm and a movement that’s only three millimeters thick. To achieve this thinness, the movement had to be redesigned to ensure an unobstructed view of the mechanism through the sapphire crystal, which displays the Clou de Paris hobnail guilloché pattern on the remaining plate surface and the smooth edges of hand-chamfered bridges. This ingenious piece of beauty and fine workmanship is available in two versions : a gray movement in a rose gold case and a rose movement in a platinum case.
