The recipe for success is very much on the menu for IWC which is regularly starred in “watch gourmet” ratings. Over a quarter of a century since it first emerged from the Schaffhausen ovens, the Portofino line has been adapted to modern tastes through four new introduction, including the Dual Time and the Hand-Wound Eight Days presented on this GMT cover. Both are equipped with new calibres. The Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days is entrusted with a new in-house 59210 movement featuring a distinctive design and an imposing barrel. The latter ensures a theoretical nine-day running autonomy, but a gear mechanism stops the movement at the 192nd hour in order to avoid any loss of chronometric precision. Equipped with four gold screws enabling micro-adjustment without any index, its balance is the only part visible on the reverse side of the movement, and the rest is entirely covered by two bridges finely circular-grained and adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif.

The elegance and refinement of the dial available in three colours and of the gold or steel case of this Portofino also characterise the Dual Time model, which also radiates a pleasing Dolce Vita attitude. Especially since its excellent readability (enhanced by a special varnish on the day/night display) is matched by extreme user friendliness: local time is adjusted by the crown by moving the hour hand forward or backward in stages, along with automatic date correction – and all of this is achieved independently of the movement itself, since the hour and seconds hands continue running. A stop seconds device enables the user to adjust his Portofino to the nearest second. Twin barrels ensure a three-day power reserve for this self-winding movement with its high-quality finishing visible through the sapphire crystal caseback and comprising an oscillating weight engraved with the Probus Scafusia seal: tested and approved in Schaffhausen.
