Piaget once again hits the thinness record trail with the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic 910P, the world’s thinnest mechanical self-winding watch. From a strictly horological standpoint, ultra-thin is not a complication itself. But when one considers the technical developments involved in conquering the precious tenths of a millimeter required to achieve watch recordbreaking thinness, one understands why Piaget regards ultra-thin as an in-house complication. While Piaget has been cultivating this experience since 1957, a major new milestone was laid three years ago with the creation of the world’s thinnest hand-wound watch incorporating a new construction principle merging case and movement. The new Altiplano Ultimate Automatic, whose 4.30mm thickness places earns it the top spot in this particular ranking, picks up this innovative principle while taking it step further. The 219 movement components pared down to extremes – with certain wheels measuring just 0.12mm thick compared with 0.20mm for a traditional movement – once again break free of the classical bipartite caliber/exterior distinction. The two unite to form an inseparable whole, with the case itself serving as a baseplate. Winding is ensured by a black PVD-coated 22K gold oscillating weight discreetly placed on the rim of the movement, on the dial side. This audacious development is presented in pink gold or white gold versions.
