Who could be better placed than Richard Mille ambassador Pablo Mac Donough to realize the brute force of the hard knocks sustained during polo matches ? Six years after the first RM 053 designed to embrace the champion player’s wrist, Richard Mille wanted to push resistance limits even further with its RM 053-01 presented at the SIHH 2018, this time equipped with a tourbillon ! It took two years to develop and patent its laminated sapphire crystal, a world first in the watch industry. Even in case of extreme shocks, such as a very powerful mallet blow, the two layers of armored glass might crack but would never shatter, thus avoiding any risk of splinters entering the skin or the movement. The spirit of innovation is also reflected in the sophisticated 3D movement construction, in which tensioners built around ten pulleys keep the central baseplate “floating in mid-air” – i.e. resting on two braided steel cables measuring just 0.27mm thick (the equivalent of three human hairs) that keep it firmly suspended and enable the movement to withstand 5000g accelerations. While this model is issued in a 30-piece limited series, the Carbon TPT® from which the armored case is made renders each watch truly unique. Naturally bearing the colors of Argentina, this suspended micro-architectural work embodies a perfect aesthetic and technical symbiosis, a pairing every bit as efficient as the player and his mount.
