Since the 19^th Century, Tiffany has pioneered a number of important watchmaking innovations : among others, the Tiffany Timer from 1868, which was America’s first stopwtach ; the patent on the green luminescent coating on hands and hour markers filed by its gemmologist George Kunz ; prizes received at the end of the 19^th century at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris and Philadelphia for jewelry watches, and at the Chicago Fair for astronomical clocks, not to mention the seven American presidents who purchased or received Tiffany watches, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who wore his gold Tiffany watch at the Yalta conference in 1945. Both elegant and functional, with a touch of aesthetic originality, this highly legible annual calendar served as the inspiration for a model in the new CT60^TM collection.

 

According to Nicola Andreatta (Vice President and General Manager, Tiffany & Co Swiss Watches), “watchmaking is a strategic area for Tiffany & Co, which has invested enormous amounts in it and for the long term, whether in terms of marketing, production, boutiques and human resources. Somehow our first CT60^TM collection is reminiscent of our history and reflects this heritage. The brand’s craftsmanship, the attention devoted to tiny details… We are determined to breathe new life into the watchmaking credibility that Tiffany & Co enjoyed in the past when it has a Manufacture in Geneva”. The unveiling of the new CT60^TM collection in April 2015 went hand-in-hand with the opening of an impressive store in Geneva, taking up two floors on a strategic corner of the famous Rue du Rhône. For Tiffany this is to a certain extent a case of going back to the roots, since the company founder Charles Lewis Tiffany chose to set up a four-storey factory there back in 1874.  This celebrated legacy and centuries of Swiss watchmaking expertise unite in the Tiffany CT60^TM.

Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of New York City’s first and greatest jeweler, made every moment count in a life of risk and reward. His ambition and daring exemplified that famous phrase – the New York Minute – and the energy and innovative spirit it represents. The Atlas clock he installed above his store and that today presides over the Fifth Avenue flagship is a lasting tribute to his powerful vision as a jeweler and watchmaker. “Good design is good business,” he often said, and so was inspired thinking, as he proved in 1858, when he bought 20 miles of extra cable used to lay the Atlantic telegraph cable. Tiffany created mementos with four-inch cable lengths finished with brass, as well as paperweights, watch charms, canes and umbrella handles. On the day these goods went on sale, police were called to control the crowds clamoring for a piece of history. By the turn of the 20^th century, Tiffany & Co. was the world’s premier jeweler and a renowned watchmaker, whose founder was known for good works as much as “good business.” A civic leader, he helped to finance the construction of the Statue of Liberty and public parks throughout the city. He was also an original trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. It is hardly surprising then that a timepiece like the Tiffany East West^TM literally turns the rules of watchmaking on its side, with a rectangular shape.
